International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year to recognise the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and to call for gender equality.
The theme for International Women's Day 2023 is #EmbraceEquity the campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren't enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.
The history of International Women's Day dates back to 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding better working conditions, higher pay, and the right to vote. In 1911, International Women's Day was first observed in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Today, International Women's Day is celebrated around the world, and serves as a call to action to accelerate gender equality and women's empowerment.
Why is International Women's Day important?
Celebrate women's achievements: International Women's Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is a day to recognise the contributions that women have made to society, and to honour the women who have paved the way for future generations.
Call for gender equality: Despite progress in recent years, women continue to face gender-based discrimination and inequality in many areas of life. International Women's Day is a call to action to accelerate gender equality and women's empowerment, and to promote equal rights and opportunities for women and girls.
Raise awareness: International Women's Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about issues affecting women and girls, such as gender-based violence, unequal access to education and healthcare, and the gender pay gap. It is a day to shine a spotlight on these issues, and to work towards finding solutions.
Inspire change: International Women's Day is a call to action to inspire change. It is a day to encourage individuals, organisations, and governments to take action towards gender equality and women's empowerment. By working together, we can create a more equal and just world for all.
